Barro Cross – Atzompa, Oaxaca:

Don Luis Gilberto Garcia Blanco has been working barro since he was a child. His mother was the originator of what is now considered a classic style of Atzompa barro: exquisite pieces intricately decorated with flowers and leaves, colored in traditional barro and barro rojo (red clay). Her work was so widely recognized that it’s still found in many museums throughout the world, including the MET in NYC, International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, N.M., Mingei Museum in San Diego, and many more. Don Luis learned under her tutelage and continues her tradition in his shop named after her, Artesanias Theodora Blanco. Each piece is meticulously made by hand with no molds or guides.

Estrella de Chiapas – San Cristobal, Chiapas

You won’t find the Holiday stars anywhere else! MyCajita worked directly with Donna Ana Lopez Entzin to design and create this custom ornament inspired by the felt hearts that can be found throughout the region and available on our store. Each star was cut and stitched by hand by Donna Ana, who worked over 120 days to make this Estrella a reality for you to enjoy. The metallic green and gold tinsel is a first and gives this star the added sparkle that you’re sure to notice.

Pajarito de Paz – Taxco, Guerrero

We were so amazed by the beautiful artwork of our dia de los Muertos skulls from Gustavo Rodriguez Ramirez that we had to showcase it again. This pajarito de paz (bird of peace) pops with bright, playful colors, and designs that reflect the Nahua background of Gustavo and his family who hails from the state of Guerrero, but now lives in San Miguel.

Mouth Blown Hand Painted Esferas – Chignahuapan, Puebla

Nestled in the northern foothills of the Sierra Norte mountain range in the state of Puebla is the city of Chignahuapan. Recently named a puebla magica by the Mexican government, this small quaint town dedicates itself to making holiday ornaments. Each piece is mouth blown from glass tubes and hand decorated and painted. With the whole town dedicated to this it’s no wonder that they’ve received world renown for their work. In fact, the Vatican decorates its annual Christmas tree with the towns ornaments every year. We teamed up with Boutique Navideña this year to deliver to you three unique mouth blown, hand painted ornaments: a traditional twist on the holiday colors, red holly and green leaves playfully painted along a white background, a spiral multi-colored Mexican inspired globe, and a colorful Mexican trompo sure to conjure old memories of anyone who grew up in Mexico playing with this traditional toy.
