Ofrenda Box

Ofrenda Box

MyCajita wants to help you remember your loved ones and keep the tradition as authentic as possible. Our Dia de Los Muertos box gives you what you need to celebrate and respect what this day is all about. We’ve custom-designed an alter set, 3 hand-made Barro negro pieces, replicas from actual pottery from the 1st Monte Albon period of Oaxaca (500 BC).

It includes a copalero and virgin copal, to clean the air. A candelero and cempasuchil scented candles, to light the way and for the fragrance to help them find their way. A salero, and rock salt to keep the soul pure while it is in this world visiting us. There’s also a Barro Negro Muertos Skull, a beautiful showpiece and perfect addition to your ofrenda. Also included, hand-stamped Papel Picado, it’s said that when the Papel Picado moves it’s because our loved ones have entered the room. Add to this a glass of water to quench the thirst of your loved ones and your ofrenda: their favorite food/drink, and you have an authentic alter to celebrate this tradition with honor and respect.

Barro Negro Calavera Skull

Barro Negro (black clay) dates back to 500 BC and was a traditional craft of the Zapotecs and Mixtecs of the central valleys of Oaxaca. The tradition continues today, just about an hour south of Oaxaca City in the town of San Bortolo Coyetepec. This is where Doña Esther Real and her family mix the unique clay that comes from their fields, mold it into forms and hand-cut beautiful designs into them. MyCajita’s Barro Negro Muertos Skull is a beautiful showpiece, featuring a flower and braid with intricate floral carvings on the skull and unique face carvings to mimic the traditional face painting that many people do for Dia de Los Muertos.

Barro Negro Alter Set: Copalero (Incense Burner), Velero (Candle Holder), Salero (Salt Holder)

These hand-made pieces were influenced by pottery that comes from the 1st Monte Albon period of Oaxaca (500 BC). The native people were known as Zapotecas, and they celebrated this day by burning copal to purify the area, lighting a fire to help guide the souls, and using cal/salt to keep the souls pure during their visit. The round fat feet are a feature that many artifacts from that period displayed. The alter set is made in the traditional Barro Negro method and has matching floral carvings.

Papel Picado

Hand stamped by artesanos from San Salvador Huixcolotla, Puebla. This 15-foot long string of papel picado can be hung above or around your ofrenda, each string has different colored panels with varied scenes of Dia de Los Muertos.

Cempasuchil Tea Lights

Amor y Flor has put a lot of love into these candles. Scented in the traditional flower of Dia de Los Muertos, the cempasuchil (marigold) flower can be seen and smelled throughout the streets of Mexico during this celebration. It’s said that the sweet fragrant smell of the cempasuchil is what helps guide our loved ones to our home. The Sugar Skull scented candle has a sweet mix of vanilla, sweet cream, and sugar; an ode to the sugar skulls used in many ofrendas.

Copal Virgin, Rock Salt, Charcoal

Copal is the resin/sap that comes from the tree and has been used for centuries in events and ceremonies as a way to cleanse the location, person, or event. The Copal Virgin is called so because it comes from inside of the tree and has a cleaner smell and burn than other copals. The Rock Salt is said to keep the soul pure while it is visiting us.
