THE PROCESS

Each Tenango is embroidered by hand by talented artisans with cotton thread to create everything from wearable art to the one-of-a-kind art pieces you see here for framing. First, artisans cut the Mexican manta for the artwork. Then, the unique designs are hand traced onto the fabric using a pencil and each piece was embroidered using a "blind stitch" technique. You’ll notice that the stitches are completely hidden on the front of the fabric and almost completely hidden on the inside of the fabric as well!

Otomi textiles represent a beautiful Mexican tradition that has been passed from generation to generation. The embroidery style known as "Tenangos", uses vibrant colors, and unique floral and animal designs which represent the life of the town. Each Otomi piece is hand embroidered on ivory muslin by Otomi artisans. Each piece can take hours, days, or even months to complete.
