Huichol Art Work:

Huichol is a type of beadwork art where a single layer of brightly colored beads form a distinctive geometric pattern. It is a form of “writing” that tells the stories of the Huichol culture while taking us through a magical and mythical journey through history.

The Process:

To create these remarkable pieces, skilled artisans begin by shaping and molding the clay, forming the iconic calavera shape. This initial step pays homage to the ancient art of barro negro pottery, which dates back to 500 BC. Once the clay has been carefully sculpted, it is left to dry.

The next stage of the process is where the magic truly happens. Using their meticulous expertise, artisans adorn half of the calavera's face with vibrant and intricate Huichol beadwork. Each tiny bead is thoughtfully placed, creating stunning, colorful designs that pay tribute to the rich Huichol culture.

This fusion of barro negro and Huichol artistry results in calaveras that are a striking representation of Mexican craftsmanship, bridging the past and present in a truly exceptional display of cultural heritage. These pieces are a testament to the dedication and skill of the artisans who bring them to life.

Discover the thrilling collaboration between two artisans that led to our stunning Huichol Calaveras Box!

Doña Esther Real and her husband Don Emilio Ortiz have been crafting Barro negro pottery for generations, carrying on this tradition with their three children. Their family-run business supports ten families in their community and has grown over the years. Barro negro pottery, also known as "black clay," originates from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, and is distinguished by its unique color, sheen, and intricate designs. The roots of Barro negro pottery date back to the Monte Albán period (500 BC), with examples of it discovered at archaeological sites, primarily in the form of jars and other utilitarian items. This craft has endured as a traditional art form among the Zapotecs and Mixtecs of the Central Valleys region to this day.

The artisans responsible for the stunning beading on our Huichol Calavera Box hail from the Wixárika community of Tateikie in San Andrés Cohamiata, located in the municipality of Mezquitic, Jalisco, Mexico. This family-run business spans three generations, with younger members awaiting their 18th birthday and the completion of their studies before joining the family operation. Your purchase contributes to sustaining these family-run enterprises, which, in turn, bolsters local communities and secures the future for upcoming generations.
